In Nigeria a boy has to pay dearly for supporting Arsenal. You need to read everything as reproduced below. The irony thing is, he still love Arsenal and even proclaimed the slogan of “Arsenal for life” despite the fact that he tread the path of death, after just regaining consciousness.
Arsenal for life! Screamed Dodiki Anjorin, immediately he regained consciousness after the major operation to remove the kitchen knife buried in his skull. Dodiki, a staunch Arsenal fan did not even ask after his own health but was more pre-occupied with the fortunes of his darling team which at that point in time was engaged in an exciting match with Tottenham. Arsenal won 3-1.It was under similar circumstances in which he was supporting his favourite English football team a few days earlier, that Anjorin was stabbed in the head by another fanatical fan of a rival football club, Bolton FC. Mother of stabbed Arsenal fan cries to Nigerians
The unfortunate event landed him at the emergency ward of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital where top surgeons battled for hours to save his life. Dodiki who has since been operated upon was also able to tell his own story of his near encounter with death. His story which was corroborated by his brother Yusuf Anjorin is presented here.
Narrating how it all happened, Dodiki said the disagreement began after he expressed optimism that Arsenal would carry the day in the encounter with Bolton. This optimism apparently did not go down well with his assailant, Akeem Salami, a Bolton supporter, who felt slighted. Before long, a heated argument ensued and before any one knew it, the two were locked in a fight.
Taking up the story from the beginning, Yusuf said: “On Monday Dodiki sent someone to call me. It was around 11pm and there was no electricity. He gave me money N 250.00 to go and eat. I was coming back from where I went to eat when I saw them fighting, I was appealing to him to stop, when the other guy, Akeem who also lives in the same compound with us carried a suya roasting tray and threw it at Dodiki. So he started shouting fire! fire!, he was still dusting the ashes of the coals on his clothes when Akeem brought kitchen knife and stabbed my brother.”
Continuing, Yusuf said he was confused because then he did not know what was happening until a friend told him that they were arguing about football match between Arsenal and Bolton that night. “You see, in my house we the guys are all Arsenal fans. From what they said, my brother was arguing with his friend who is also our neighbour that Arsenal would win the match but the other guy was supporting Bolton. This somehow resulted to a big fight and the boy later stabbed my brother.
“I quickly rushed and called one of these Keke Napep which took us to police station, where I made an entry and obtained a police report to present at the hospital. We first went to Lagos General Hospital and the hospital now referred us to LUTH. There at the police station I was asked to come the next day which we did, I was asked to get the photograph of the boy.
Still speaking, Yusuf explained that he learnt that the police has been to their compound to ask questions from the co- tenants. “Up till now we have not heard anything again from the police.
The family of the boy who stabbed my brother has also packed their things and ran away. Right now, all the members of the family have all abandoned their home, their house is under lock and key”
Also speaking Dodiki’s mother, Mrs. Sefinatu Anjorin appealed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to investigate and bring the suspect to book. Mrs Anjorin who lamented that since the incident was reported to the police station, the police have not been able to get hold of the suspect, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and football lovers as well as Arsenal supporters to assist the family. Her words, “My son is dying because of Arsenal. All Arsenal fans in Nigeria should help us.”
In a chat with members of the surgical team who carried out the operation, leader of the team, Consultant Oral and Maxillo- facial surgeon and Head of Department, Oral Maxillo – facial Surgery, LUTH, Dr Olugbemiga Ogunlewe, expressed optimism that Anjorin was responding to treatment. She however, expressed concern that his continued recovery depend largely on compliance with prescribed therapy.
Another member of the team, Dr. Lanre Adeyemo, a surgeon in the department painted a graphic picture of Dodiki’s ordeal when he was admitted at the casualty ward. “The knife went in through his skull, passed through the bridge of the nose into the septum of the nose which is a very dangerous area in the face because there are some blood vessels there. To remove the knife we have to open up and split the upper jaw and even after we had to split the upper jaw we still could not remove the knife. so we now had to create a space by removing the bone around the blade of the knife.
It was only then that the knife was removed. That was one challenge, the other challenge was to stop the bleeding and the CT scan helped us. As far as we were concerned that knife was not sterile and it went in completely up to the handle. So he needs absolute compliance to antibiotics”
Also expressing some concern, Adeyemo noted that the Anjorin family had confessed not to have money and these antibiotics are very expensive. From our own end here, We have tried our best. The rest is up to his compliance with the antibiotics because the knife passed through several delicate tissues. But am sure that the management will be up to task to actually provide those things for him.
Before the surgery commenced, one of the fears of the team was that Anjorin might bleed to death after the knife was removed.
“Although an x-ray of the head was taken, it did not show clearly whether any major blood vessel had been affected so it was decided that a Computerized Tomography (CT ) scan should be done immediately. Thankfully, the eyeball is intact the only thing is that Anjorin will have to live with the scar the rest of his life.”
